Science-Policy-Action Interface for Post Disaster Resilience Building: Navigating Complex Systems for Sustainable Recovery, Rebuilding and Resilience

Nearly four months since the cyclone Ditwah made landfall on Sri Lanka, the nation ponders on the state of resilience and ability to absorb future shocks as a result of climate change. Years of investment, particularly after the Tsunami, into disaster preparedness did not demonstrate the expected resilience and response that demanded rapid reorganization for recovery. Questions remain if the recovery and rebuilding considered science-based scenarios modelling? While multiple approaches from the government, non-governmental entities and public drew recovery and rebuilding responses, a clear roadmap based on a ‘Science-Policy-Enterprise-Action Interface for Post Ditwah Resilience Building’ remains wanting. As the facilitator, I presented this systems model at the Roundtable on ‘Science-Policy and Action for Resilience Building: A Post-Ditwah Analysis’ hosted by Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS).
